Import Export Code (IEC)

Import Export Code (IEC)

The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a vital business identification number required for anyone engaged in importing or exporting goods to or from India. It is mandatory for all individuals or entities involved in cross-border trade, unless specifically exempted under law. Without an IEC, no person or business can legally undertake import or export activities. For service exports, obtaining an IEC is generally not required, except in cases where the service provider intends to claim benefits or incentives under the Foreign Trade Policy. With the introduction of GST, the IEC is now the same as the PAN (Permanent Account Number) of the entity. However, it must still be formally issued and separately published by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) based on an online application.

Import Export Code (IE Code)

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a crucial requirement for any business engaged in the import or export of goods to or from India. Commonly referred to as the IEC number, it is a unique 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Possessing a valid IEC registration certificate is mandatory for all entities involved in international trade. Before importing goods into India, the business must ensure that it holds both GST registration and a valid IEC number, as both are necessary for customs clearance.

Failure to obtain either of these registrations can result in serious consequences. Goods may be held at the port, leading to demurrage charges, potential legal issues, or in some cases, confiscation or destruction of the shipment.

Therefore, securing an IEC along with GST registration is an essential first step for any importer or exporter aiming to operate legally and efficiently in India.
