Monthly/Quarterly GST Return Filing

Monthly/Quarterly GST Return Filing

GST return filing is a mandatory compliance process for all registered businesses under the Goods and Services Tax regime in India. Depending on the business’s annual turnover and the type of taxpayer, GST returns must be filed either monthly or quarterly. Businesses with a turnover above ₹5 crore are required to file monthly returns, which include GSTR-1 (details of outward supplies) and GSTR-3B (summary return of sales, purchases, and tax paid). On the other hand, small taxpayers with turnover up to ₹5 crore can opt for the Quarterly Return Filing and Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme, under which they file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly using PMT-06.

What is GST Return?

A GST Return is a comprehensive statement submitted by individuals or businesses registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. It records financial transactions, including income and expenses, to help tax authorities assess the correct tax liability.

GST return filing is mandatory for all GSTIN holders and is typically done online. The return provides details such as:

  • Purchases: Goods or services bought during the tax period.
  • Sales: Goods or services sold.
  • Output GST: Tax collected on sales.
  • Input Tax Credit (ITC): GST paid on purchases, which can be offset against output GST.

Platforms like Stride Tax offer GST compliance software to make the process easier and more efficient.

Who Should File GST Returns?

All individuals or entities registered under GST are required to file GST returns. This includes businesses whose annual turnover exceeds the prescribed threshold, which varies based on their classification (e.g., regular taxpayers or composition scheme taxpayers). Filing must be done within the specified deadlines to avoid late fees and penalties.
